   "The Basin, Rottnest"
I spent a lot of time at the Basin in my trips
to Rottnest, as have most people from Perth.
The green tones of the water were crystal clear,
even on this windy spring day. This meant I had
the beach all to myself; even hardy cyclists took
one look and cycled on to find a place out of the
wind. I found a nook under the shade of a rock wall.

As the tide went out, the edges of the reef appeared,
and I was able to catch this in the pastel.
A friend mentioned that it reminded them of
ricefields, so after I returned to Bali, I had the idea
to find a ricefield in Ubud that echoed this scene,
so I worked on “Ricefield Reflections” to accompany
  “The Basin”.

   ”Towards Point Walter”
The view is from Dalkieth looking to
Point Walter, a favourite picnic spot on the
grand Swan River. I found a spot with wattle
   blooming, providing the perfect foreground
to the peaceful water, a contrast of yellow
   and blue.

"Kensington Bushland" 2006
Soft pastel on sand paper
28 x 23cm

US$ 450

  “Kensington Bushland” Perth
This piece of bush in the suburbs has been
set aside through a community effort. When I
lived in South Perth, I used to take my dog
for a walk there, and was so pleased to see
the bush preserved. The wildflowers were
always lovely here, but now, with care, the
bush is blooming in an even more stunning
way, and will be there for future generations
   to enjoy.

"Herdsman Lake" 2006
Soft pastel on sand paper

   ”Herdsman Lake
The lake is bigger than King’s Park, my sister
   told me.
The bird life is prolific and the colours of the
reeds in the late afternoon turn a range of
   yellows and oranges.

    ”Daisy City”
This view of the river is also from the
Dalkieth side. Daisies grow right up to the water.
A lovely accident of nature has blown their seeds
    from neighbouring gardens.

  ”Lake at Rottnest”
The salt lakes of Rottnest were always an
attraction for me on bike rides around the island.
I was pleased to cycle to this scene and be able
to stop, watch and draw. The reflection of the
lighthouse in the water was a fleeting thing,
as the sun came out only once for a few minutes.
I was visited by the ducks on the lake. The colours
of the flora around the lake were surprising
  and intense.

   “Spring in King’s Park”
It was essential for my drawing trip to Perth
to get to King’s Park. The city has so much
to thank the foresight of the early settlers to put this
bushland aside. I found a spot that was not a
garden, but a piece of bush in full, wild bloom.

  ”Observation Point” Esperance

I spent nine hours in one day, working on this
piece. On a long shift like that, I have to try to
remember to get up and walk around a little bit
from time to time, but in this case I was rewarded
for the long hours. Alone on the beach, I was
surprised to look up and see big tails splashing
in the water. It was a pod of four humpback
whales playing right in front of me!

  ”Lucky Bay” Esperance

While I was working on this piece, over two
afternoons, I was watched closely by three
kangaroos, famous for hanging out on the beach.
They must have wondered what this strange
person was doing. The second day at the site
was a rainy day, so we made coffee and hoped
it would clear up. Then I noticed a big group of
dolphins, who circled the bay fishing and surfing.
Another amazing sight – it was like the wildlife was
performing for me, the Indonesian tourist.
